The MTV VMAs or Video Music Awards 2020 were aired this Sunday night on 31st August and despite the current circumstances had all the paparazzi cornered, the event lived up to its reputation and even ended up being a quarantine escape. Consequently, some would even say that the event used the pandemic norms to its advantage, as artists performed at remote locations within New York City. Therefore, from fashion statements to those about social issues and tributes to Chadwick Boseman, the VMAs was an absolute feast for the eyes, body and soul.

Keke Palmer became the first woman of colour to host the entire show and also the second youngest person to do so (The first being Drew Barrymore at the age of seven, IKR?!). Instead of a comical introduction, she kicked off the event with a poignant, yet hopeful speech about the Black Lives Matter movement and a tribute to the King of Wakanda. The event started with The Weeknd, who lit up New York City’s sky with his ‘Blinding Lights’ performance, and also struck chords by sending out justice calls for the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake. Rapper DaBaby also stood against police brutality while performing ‘Rockstar.’
