Two years into this University and almost every week I get a message stating that the “Biggest Model United Nations” is scheduled to take place in the coming days. In the beginning, I would really be enthusiastic about them. However, as MUNs today have sprung up like mushrooms, it is time we weigh their importance.
NOT REAL,AT ALL
The concept of MUNs is certainly appreciable. However, what is sad is the part that many MUNs do not simulate the United Nations. They have become a place of useless discussions as the delegates come with the sole purpose of winning, violating their foreign policies while putting up an argument.
INEXPERIENCED EXECUTIVE BOARDS
This is the root of all problems. While MUNs can be a deeply enriching experience- sharpening your speaking skills and boosting your confidence,an inexperienced EB can make it a total time waste for you.More often than not, rampant favoritism makes MUN a truly biased affair.
THE AGENDAS ARE AS OLD AS THE HILLS
Islamophobia,LGBTQ rights,ISIS,South China Sea conflict : most new MUNs blindly copy paste an agenda from the older ones. The quality of debates has declined. Those who participate in the same agenda end up winning most of the times. This is unfair for the other participants.
LET’S FLAUNT THIS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
If not anything,MUNs are a good excuse to showcase your formals on Instagram.Truth is, they have become an instrument of partying at socials and getting pictures clicked.Though there’s nothing wrong about getting pictures clicked, the real issues getting sidelined is the real problem.
NOT EVERY MUN IS BAD THOUGH
MUNs are a great way to improve your knowledge and communication skills if that is the motive behind your participation in them. For a good learning experience, put in a little time researching about the MUN you are going to participate in,and don’t get blinded by the big prizes at stake.
