The Planning Forum, St. Stephen’s College, is very proud to announce the return of its Moot Court Competition Р“Error and Trial: Justice and Jury” to be held on 14-15 October, 2017.
The competition is an initiative to introduce a moot court styled competition for non-law students. The aim of the competition is to give non-law students an idea of the courtroom battles in the country and perhaps push them towards considering their skills and abilities in the field of law. We will follow a semi-moot court format and will have participants from all backgrounds of academia sans law.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The tournament shall follow a jury format; wherein each match-up will be judged by a jury comprising of an odd number of jury members.
The two day event; shall see a two-legged preliminary round on the first day and the semi-finals and final on the second day.
There will be two case problems argued throughout the tournament, one each on either day. The teams will be given the case files 15 days before the competition tournament begins via email. Each case file will include the following:
1. Case Problem facts
2. Witness Statements
3. Basic Laws Pertaining to the Case Problem
The scope of the legal debate will be limited to the laws mentioned in the case file. Teams must prepare both sides for each case as they would be required to argue on both sides of the tournament and hence must submit their arguments for both cases to the organizing committee at the time of registration on arrival to the venue on the day of the event.
SPEAKING FORMAT
Opening Case: Both speakers of the prosecution present their case where each speaker can speak for a maximum of 7 minutes.
Defence Case: Both speakers of the defence will present their case where each speaker can speak for a maximum of 7 minutes.
Rebuttal: Prosecution will be allowed to speak after the defence presents their case. Since both teams get 14 minutes each to speak, their rebuttal speech can extend only up to the remainder of the allotted 14 minutes, if any.
JURY: The members of the jury will get to ask each speaker 2 questions at the end of each speech. The teams will judge the jury members on the basis of the question they ask, jury members will judge teams on the basis of the case they present and how they engage with jury members. There shall be no follow up questions from the members of the jury during rebuttal arguments. The jury in each room will comprise of two non law students and a law student.
