The sexual harassment case against Delhi University’s Chemistry Department HOD, Ramesh Chandra still remains hanging. The issue was raised before the Executive Council but on Thursday, they postponed it for legal opinion.
“We raised the concern that an insertion of an extra-legal body can be used to weaken the case” Times of India reported an EC member as saying.
“A legal opinion is neither a judicial pronouncement nor a judgement.HOD found guilty of sexual harassment must be removed without further loss of time as legal opinion was not mandated by the law of the land.” Ashwini Shankar, Chairman of Indian National Teacher’s Congress told Times of India.
The case turned controversial when a meeting took place on Wednesday, where Executive Committee questioned the administration to delay the report submitted by the Internal Complaints Committee and the sub-committee. The victim in the case has accused the University of defending the guilty.
In an attempt to prevent such cases in future, an example was set when Executive Committee removed the HOD of Department of African Studies when he was found guilty of sexual harassment.
