Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies Cancels Play on Kashmir

‘Aksariyat Akliyat’ , a play based on the politics and history of Kashmir was to be performed at Delhi university’s Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies on 25th January but got cancelled one day prior to the performance after the college administration denied permission for it. According to theatre group, the administration told them that the Kashmir issue is quite sensitive at this point of time and it can cause problems in the college.

The theatre group is an independent group named Alternative Space Project and was to perform the play which traced the politics and history behind the formation of Jammu and Kashmir, the play is directed by Mr. Vivek Tyagi . The play was to be performed as the part of the college’s annual festival – Crescendo 2.0 event. The play had previously gained critical acclaim after being performed at the Prithvi theatre and was also mentioned in leading media portals.

“We received a call from the students council one day prior to the event that the administration has objections and issues regarding the play since it is based on such a sensitive issue of Kashmir and it might effect the sentiments of the audience.” Karan Chaudhary, Former President of college and Co-writer of the play told us.

The group members highly condemned this act and said that it was an assault on the freedom of speech and expression.An apology letter was demanded from the administration which they claimed was anyway refused by the authorities.

However, the administration claimed that they were not aware of the content or topic of the play and added that the play was canceled due to some factual inaccuracies in the content.
