On Wednesday, 8th January, Delhi University students took to streets to protest against CAA, NRC and the violence inflicted upon their JNU counterparts. The protest comes days after JNU students were attacked by assailants in the University campus on Sunday night.
According to reports, about 1000 students across colleges swarmed the streets, supported by members of faculty. The protests also come at a time when the horrors of police crackdown in Jamia still remains afresh.
The day began when students of St. Stephens took to campus lawns to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and rampant attacks on students of JNU and Jamia Milia Islamia. This was the first time that the college witnessed a protest in its premises in the last 30 years. The students reportedly boycotted classes and read out preamble to the Constitution to voice their dissent.
The rally of students which happened across North Campus ended at Faculty of Arts where a crowd of more than a thousand students was present in attendance.
During the protest at St Stephens College, an image of a woman carrying a banner that read “Kashmir Azad Karo” has also been making rounds on the internet. According to a report, Delhi Police is likely to take action against the student protestor carrying the poster. “The picture on social media was brought to our notice and we have sent the same to the Delhi Police Special Cell for them to verify it, If found to be genuine, the legal department will help take appropriate action in this regard,” said a police source.
Despite witnessing rainfall and biting cold weather in parts of Delhi, students, with their unwavering determination, were seen on the streets holding banners that read “Students against Fascism”, while slogans of “Azaadi” reverberated in the air.
The students across universities also voiced their support in favour of Bharat Bandh that was called by the trade unions on Wednesday.
