Over the last two decades, plastic has become a major part of our everyday lives. The basic necessities of ours constitute plastic. Recently, the use of SUPs ie, single use plastic was banned which is the non- reusable plastic which contributes the most to the total plastic waste production. However, while we sit back, relax and assume that this problem is going to get solved on its own as a ban has been put on the use of SUPs but for it to solve, we must act.
Many colleges have taken up the initiative to ACT rather than sit back, relax and let the problem figure out the solution on its own.
Gargi College recently started off with the campaign BYOM – bring your own mugs which encourages the students to bring their own mugs to college everyday and use them to buy drinks. This emphasizes upon the least use of plastic cups in the campus. Also, the students council of the college recently introduced a cleanliness community #BEEP whose first campaign ‘Say Yes To Kulhad’ began with the introduction of ‘Kulhads’ (cups made of mud) in association with Enactus therefore completely banning the use of plastic cups on the college campus!
Apart from various campaigns many activities and competitions are being carried out by the students as the environment society of St. Stephen’s College organised a Scavenger Hunt Competition where challenges were given to the participants in order to clean the campus and spread awareness.
Zakir Husain College conducted a poster making competition on the theme ‘if you cant REUSE it REFUSE it’. While the NSS unit of Daulat Ram College conducted a best out of waste competition and a talent hunt competition on the topic ‘Beat the Heat’. Kamala Nehru college went out of the box and organized a poetry competition and later installed a collection box for e-waste.
The Peace Society of Jesus and Mary College in association with Enactus JMC and Mercatus – The Marketing Society of Jesus & Mary College organised a plastic collection drive on 27th September with an aim to collect as much plastic as they can for recycling. NSS SGGSCC celebrated NSS day in campus by spreading awareness about the harmful effects due to usage of single use plastic.
