It is always said that at the end of every dark tunnel, there’s a light of hope. This pride month that light might have come in the form of the Noida Metro Rail Corporation dedicating Noida Sector 50 metro station to the transgender community.
“This initiative has been taken to uplift and provide employment to the transgender community. Under this initiative, they will be employed for some activities such as ticketing counter and housekeeping,” said Noida Authority CEO Ms Ritu Maheshwari as reported by NDTV.
This initiative can be seen as a stepping stone towards a more inclusive society, where transgender community is not seen merely as beggars on the streets, dancers or illicts but rather as equal individuals and contributors in the society. Apart from creating employment opportunities for the transgender community, reformations and up-gradations of facilities are also being considered. The existing staff is also being sensitized towards the community.
It is after creating two pink stations dedicated entirely towards women considering their comforts and facilities, this initiative has been taken by the UP government along with the help of many NGOs working towards the same cause.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. in Kerala had taken a similar step by employing members of transgender community, however Noida Sector 50 has become the first ‘She-Man’ station in North India.
