1847: Joseph Pulitzer was born

One of the leading journalists of his time, Joseph Pulitzer was born on this day at Makó, Hungary. A leading publisher and also active in politics. Joseph contributed immensely to journalism. In his will, he endowed the Columbia University School of Journalism and subsequently, the prestigious Pulitzer prize was established.

1912: RMS Titanic sets sail for her maiden voyage 

One of the most famous ships of the world, the Titanic had set sails on this day from Southampton, England. With 2,223 people aboard, Captain Edward J. Smith was to lead the Titanic to New York City. After a collision with an iceberg, the ship sank and only 706 survived.

1925: The Great Gatsby was published

On this day, the third novel by  F. Scott Fitzgerald was published by Scribner based in New York. The Great Gatsby was largely unsuccessful at the time of publication. But the book is now a highly acclaimed classic that can be found in a lot of must-read lists.

1970: The Beatles Split

Amidst the rumours that were doing rounds for almost six months, Paul McCartney’s self-interview clearly announced his parting from The Beatles on this day which broke many hearts. McCartney’s debut solo album was due for release in just a week after this interview.

1995: Moraji Desai passes away

Moraji Desai, India’s fourth prime minister breathed his last on this day aged 99. He was the first Prime Minister who was not a member of the Congress Party. He also holds the credit of being the only Indian to receive the highest civilian honour of India and Pakistan.
