1985: Mikhail Gorbachev replaces Chernenko as Soviet leader

Following the death of Konstantin Chernenko,  Mikhail Gorbachev was selected as the new general secretary of the Soviet Union. Ho would go on to lead the Soviet Union through many domestic reforms and foreign policy changes. But the sudden and quick nature of these changes contributed to the fall of the Soviet in 1991.

1997: Beatle Paul McCartney knighted by Queen Elizabeth II

Paul McCartney, a former member of The Beatles, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. The 54-year-old lad from Liverpool became Sir Paul in a centuries-old ceremony of pomp and solemnity at Buckingham Palace in central London. McCartney dedicated his knighthood to fellow Beatles George Harrison, Ringo Starr and John Lennon and the people of the northwestern port of Liverpool.

1999: Infosys becomes the first Indian company listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange

IT services major Infosys became the first India-registered company to be listed on the Nasdaq – the second-largest stock exchange in the world. Infosys has emerged as the poster child for the Indian outsourcing industry, thanks partly to its strong revenue and profit growth.

2001: Harbhajan Singh becomes the first Indian bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket

It was a career moment for Harbhajan Singh when he took a hat-trick on the first day of a test match against Australia in 2001. He had trapped Ricky Pointing in front of the wicket, took out Adam Gilchrist with an LBW and had Shane Warne caught out. India went on to win the series 2-1. Singh was the architect of the solid win with 32 wickets in 3 Tests.

2006: Michelle Bachelet is inaugurated as the first female president of Chile

Michelle Bachelet was the first female president of Chile and the first popularly elected South American female president whose political career was established independently of her husband. She is also the seventh United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. After leaving the presidency in 2010, she was appointed the first executive director of the newly created United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. She was then reelected in 2013.

2011: Fukushima nuclear disaster

The Fukushima disaster is the second-worst nuclear disaster in history. It began when Japan recorded its largest earthquake. It caused massive devastation, and decimated the Tōhoku region of northeastern Honshu. This gave rise to a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. It led to the relocation of 1,00,000 people and is considered second only to Chernobyl in the ranking of infamous nuclear incidents. Read more about the disaster here.
