1880: Helen Keller is born

Helen Adams Keller was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and lecturer. She was born on this day in 1880 in Alabama. At the young age of 19 months, she lost her sight and hearing. The story of Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan became famous worldwide after the publication of Helen’s autobiography, “The story of my life” in 1903. It was later also adapted as a motion picture- “The Miracle Worker”.

1954: First nuclear power station opens in Obninsk

On 27th June 1954, the Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant began operations in Obninsk, near Mexico. It was the world’s first nuclear power station to generate electricity for a power grid. It operated for nearly five decades before closing operations in April 2002.

1964: P.T. Usha is born 

Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha is a retired Indian athlete. She was born on 27th June in Kozhikode, Kerela. She was the first Indian woman to reach the final of an Olympic event. For her achievements, she has been awarded the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award. She is famously known as the ‘Payyoli Express’ for her speed.

1993: Prajakta Koli is born

Prajakta Koli is an Indian YouTuber and actress and is popularly known by her YouTube name “MostlySane”. In 2019 she was part of Forbes’ list of 30 under 30 and also won Cosmopolitan’s YouTuber of the Year award. She was born on this day in 1993.
