1947: Camille Paglia’s Birth

Academic and critic, Camille Paglia was born on this day at Endicott, New York in 1947. Camille has been in limelight since her first book, Sexual Personae, Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson was published. She is in news mostly because of opinions that spark public outrage. She has written on various topics and thus her personality couldn’t be limited to a genre.

1969: Ajay Devgn was born 

Prominent Bollywood actor, Ajay Devgn was born on this day. Vishal Veeru Devgn (real name), made his debut in the industry with his stellar entry in 1991 with Phool Aur Kante. This stellar entry has now become his trademark entry and is used in various movies. Diljale, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Golmaal series and Singham are some of his most loved movies. He also made his directorial debut in 2008 with U Me Aur Hum.

1970: Meghalaya gains the status of an autonomous state within Assam

Meghalaya was created as an autonomous state within the state of Assam on this day. The autonomous status was granted by The Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act of 1969 which came into effect on 2nd April 1970. The full statehood was achieved by the state on 21 January 1972, with a Legislative Assembly of its own.

1984: Rakesh Sharma becomes the first Indian to travel to space

On this day, Soviet Union’s Soyuz T-11 expedition was launched which carried the first Indian to space. Rakesh Sharma who was an IAF pilot conducted an Earth-observing program and various yoga asanas daily, it was also the first yoga experiment to be conducted in orbit.

2011: India lifts the World Cup

This day marks the 10th anniversary of India’s World Cup victory. The final, where this memorable victory was achieved, was played at Wankhede Stadium. The win came after a huge gap of 28 years. The match was finished off in style by M.S Dhoni with a six, which still remains one of the most loved and important shots in Indian cricket history.
