1789: George Washington is elected as first President of the United States
On this in 1789, George Washington was elected to serve as the first U.S. president by a unanimous vote in the first electoral college.
1945: Yalta Conference opened
On this day in 1945, during the final stages of World War II, the Yalta Conference opened with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin meeting to plan the final defeat and occupation of Nazi Germany.
1948: Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) gained independence from Great Britain
On 4th February 1948, Ceylon was granted independence as the Dominion of Ceylon. Dominion status within the British Commonwealth was retained for the next 24 years until 22 May 1972 when it became a republic and was renamed the Republic of Sri Lanka.
2004: The Web site Facebook was launched (as TheFacebook.com)
On February 4, 2004, a Harvard sophomore named Mark Zuckerberg launches The Facebook, a social media website he had built in order to connect Harvard students with one another. By the next day, over a thousand people had registered, and that was only the beginning. The social networking service currently has over 2 billion active users.
