1936: All India Radio came into existence
It was on this day when All India Radio came into existence. The Indian State Broadcasting Service became ‘All India Radio’. Though Broadcasting in India began about 13 years before AIR came into being.
1948: The First International flight of Air India takes off
It was on this day when Air India flew its first international flight from Bombay to London. VT-CQP Malabar Princess took off on this day and landed two days later with 35 passengers including JRD Tata and Nawab Amir Ali Khan of Jamnagar on board among others.
1949: Nineteen Eighty Four is published
Geroge Orwell’s, 1984 a dystopian tale of the totalitarian regime was published on this day. It was published by Secker & Warburg as Orwell’s ninth and final book. It is believed that the seeds of 1984 were sown in Orwell’s Animal Farm. The most striking feature of 1984 is its relevance to the present day. 1984 is a cautionary tale against dictatorial regimes which coined various terms like, ‘BIG BROTHER’, and ‘doublethink’.
1955: Birth of Tim Berners Lee
The inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW), Tim Berners Lee was born on this day in London, England. He invented the web while working at CERN in 1989. He has received various accolades such as knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II and holds ten honorary doctorates.
2009: Death of Habib Tanvir
Director, actor, poet and a vibrant personality, Habib Tanvir took his last breath on this day. He was an integral part of IPTA and also a member of the Progressive Writer’s Association. He holds the credit of bringing colours of folk artists from the regions of Chattisgarh to the limelight. He worked with local artists for almost five decades.
