Book adaptations are no longer limited to the big screen,the world of television has been taken by storm too.Here are 10 TV series based on books for you to binge on!
1. Sherlock
The show features Benedict Cumberbatch as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his adventures in present day London, solving crimes with former army doctor John Watson (Martin Freeman).
The hugely popular series is based on the stories of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle and recently completed its 4th season. The show is famous for making the viewers wait for a long time in between seasons.
2. Game of Thrones
Anyone who has not been living under a rock has heard of GoT. Set in the fictional land of Westeros, the show is about the nine houses as they fight to gain control of the 7 kingdoms of Westeros.
The show, based on A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin, is famous for the brutal killings of its characters. The much awaited 7th season of the show starts in July.
3. Dexter
The show follows Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall), a blood pattern analyst for the police by day and a serial killer by the night.
Based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter and its sequels by Jeff Lindsay, the series ended in 2013 after successfully completing 8 seasons.
4. A series of Unfortunate Events
The show follows the newly orphaned Baudelaire children as they try to get away from Count Olaf who will stop at nothing to get their enormous fortune. There also elements of mystery involving a secret organization and a schism.
The first season of the Neil Patrick Harris starrer show based on the series with the same name by Lemony Snicket came out in 2017 and has been renewed for a second season.
5. Orange is the New Black
The show follows Piper Chapman who is sentenced to prison for transferring drugs to her ex-girlfriend over a decade ago.
OITNB is the most watched Netflix original and is based on the Memoirs of Piper Kerman about her year in the women’s prison.
6. Pretty Little Liars
A group of friends is texted by the mysterious ‘A’, a year after one of them went missing threatening to expose their darkest secrets.
PLL is one of the most tweeted about shows and is based on the series by Sarah Shepherd. Its 7th and final season will start its 2nd half this April.
7. The 100
In a post-apocalyptic world, a spaceship housing community sends 100 teenagers back to a war destroyed Earth to repopulate the planet.
Loosely based on the books by Kass Morgan, the show is currently in its 4th season and has been renewed for a 5th. Some people say that it might even be better than the books. *gasp!*
8. Gossip Girl
The show follows the lives of the rich and privileged teens of Manhattan whose secrets are exposed by the anonymous blogger Gossip Girl.
The show, based on the books with the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar came to an end after completing a run of 6 seasons in 2012. Gossip Girl was one of the most popular shows on television at time of its airing.
9. House of Cards
If you haven’t watched this, then you are seriously missing out. The political drama follows vengeful politician Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey) as he exacts a revenge on the people he feels betrayed him, including the President of the USA.
Adapted from the book with the same name by Michael Dobbs, the 4th season of the show came out in 2016.
10. Bones
Based on the book series by Kathy Reichs, the protagonist of the show Temperance “Bones” Brennan is a socially inept forensic anthropologist who consults for the FBI, solving murders.
The series finale aired this March after a successful run of 12 seasons which means much more episodes you can binge on.
