UGC (The University Grants Commission) has issued a circular to the registrars of all the central, state, and honorary universities including Delhi University, across the country, to make the information on reservation for EWS and disabled public.
The University Grants Commission’s circular stated that the information on reservation for EWS (Economically Weaker Section) and disabled should be made public in all the universities and colleges across the country and at all levels.
The UGC has also mentioned in its circular that it is mandatory for all centrally aided universities, colleges, and educational institutions to implement the reservation policy of the government in a proper manner.
The Delhi Teachers Association (DTA) in reference to the UGC’s circular has demanded that the University of Delhi’s Vice- Chancellor should implement the circular immediately.
Hansraj Suman, In- charge of the Delhi Teachers Association (DTA), said that the UGC circular includes all the teaching and non-teaching posts. Besides, the reservation roster should be displayed on its website from time to time. Reported, India TV
The University Grants Commission has also asked that the reserved seats lying vacant should be filled in all the institutions. The UGC has directed the universities to appraise the colleges affiliated with them of the circular.
Back in January 2021, January this year, in spite of having a special drive for EWS, 5.6% of the EWS seats at the University of Delhi were still vacant. Various reports suggest that the variance and failure to effectively distribute the seats based on various quotas was due to the inability of many applicants to get the income certificate that is required for the seat because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
High cut-offs for the students attempting to obtain their seats through the EWS quota has also been a reason in the past for the failure to populate colleges with students who have gotten in through this particular reservation.
