A few days after the violent clashes which took place at Delhi University’s Ramjas College,a Lady Shri Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur who also happens to be the daughter of a Kargil martyr posted a picture on her facebook account saying that ”I’m not afraid of ABVP”.
The picture created a storm on social media with students and many citizens supporting her for the stand she took but at the same time she was trolled and threatened by others for supporting ‘anti nationals’.The intensity of threats was such that a guy named Rohan Kumar went on to to post a comment saying that he’ll rape her and later also described how he’ll do that.A girl was openly threatened for supporting a cause causing further outrage in the student community.

“The brutal attack on innocent students by ABVP is very disturbing and should be stopped. It was not an attack on protestors, but an attack on every notion of democracy that is held dear in ever Indian’s heart. It is an attack on ideals, morals, freedom and rights of every person born to this nation. The stones that you pelt hit our bodies, but fail to bruise our ideas.

Is supporting Ramjas students a bigger cause of concern than getting rape threats from random people on the internet? Is this how we’re going to treat a 20 year old girl who took a stand for her friends and for the university she’s a part of?
Gurmehar’s story has been picked up by most of the media houses and calling her an anti national just because she supports a particular side is the most stupid thing one can do.By not allowing her to speak,trolling her and threatening her aren’t we putting a ban on free speech again which has been the root cause of this issue?
We as a country respect our army men and nothing can ever equal the sacrifices they have made for this nation.The least we can do is support and protect a girl whose father lost his life in the Kargil War protecting our country and if that’s too much to ask for just respect her,that should be more than enough.
