JNU Fiasco : 2 Years Completed On 9th February,Chargesheet Yet To Be Filed

On the evening of February 9,2016,Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) erupted in protests over the 2013 execution of Afzal Guru,a Kashmiri separatist convicted of conspiring an attack on Parliament 16 years ago.

Allegedly controversial “anti-national” slogans resonated through the campus sparking a national debate on freedom of expression and nationalism.This incident caused such a turmoil in the country,a premier University like JNU was seen as the abode of Anti nationals.

Following the commencement of the event on February 9,2016,A case in this matter was registered at Vasant Kunj North Police Station on February 11,2016,under IPC Section 124A (Sedition). The case was later transferred to the Special Cell.During investigation,two more IPC sections – 147 (punishment for rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly) – were added.Delhi Police arrested Umar Khalid,Anirban Bhattacharya and then student’s union President Kanhaiya Kumar.They However,were granted bail soon after.

Even Even though two years have passed since a sedition case was lodged against these students over the event,the Delhi Police’s Special Cell is yet to file a chargesheet.

According to Indian Express “Investigation into the case is almost done and that they are awaiting forensic reports of mobile phone and laptop data belonging to some of the suspects” a police official said.
