This year student union elections in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) will take place on two different dates. For the last 5 years, elections have been held on the same day in both universities.JNUSU polls will be held on 8th September and DUSU polls will be held on 12th September. This can cause anxiousness in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad camp while the Left parties might think they have a better chance of winning the elections in DU.

It is believed that the situation can turn in favour of Left parties, which are already gaining vote share since past two years. The left parties are campaigning against the ABVP on important issues like-violence-free campus, right to freedom of speech, privacy, and women safety.

“Our presence in DU is not as strong as in the JNU but the decision will impact the results this year. We will do ground-level campaigning in DU. We have also requested AISA for alliance,” said SFI Delhi President Prashant Mukherjee.

ABVP won 3 seats out of 4 last year while NSUI managed to win only a single seat.AISA and NSUI have gone against at ABVP at full force. With regular protest marches being organized by AISA and their presence at every event which was disrupted by ABVP last year, the party has gained a lot of members. The party is seen as the only organisation in Delhi University fighting against ABVP on every issue.

ABVP too has gained a lot of members in the past one year with its constant call of promoting patriotism among students. The recently organized Chatra Adhikar Rally was the show of strength by ABVP to all political outfits clearly directing how big their support base is.Thousands of people joined the rally and marched across the campus.

NSUI in its recent attempt called out ABVP for its association with RSS.They even went ahead and played the anti national card by accusing ABVP of being an anti national organisation as it is associated with RSS.

What waits to be seen on 12th September 2017 is that whether ABVP would be able to show its magic for the fourth consecutive time or will the left parties arrive into DU politics after a long break. If AISA manages to win elections this year it would be an historic win for the party.
