Delhi University’s constituent college, Ramanujan College, is looking towards introducing a diploma in mass media. This will be the first-of-its-kind diploma program to be run by the undergraduate colleges of the university.
The program aims to be ‘skill-oriented’, hoping to teach important and lucrative skills to its undertakers. The course will be a one-year diploma in Mass Media and Film Studies. It was approved by the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Humanities of the college last month. Following the approval, it was also run through the Academic Council. The next step is to get the approval by running it through the Executive Council, after which the college will be free to formulate guidelines the way it sees fit for the program.
Ramanujan College is a South Campus college that was established in 2010, and has since, gone on to offer some of the most coveted programs available at the university. Each year, it sees a large number of applicants for its limited number of seats. Ramanujan College’s principal Dr. S. P. Aggarwal. said that this is the first time a diploma course for undergraduate students will be run by a college of DU. He also went on to add that the course will be open to all and not be restricted to only students of Delhi University.
Dr. Aggarwal gave a brief overview of the program by stating, “This is basically a skill-oriented course aimed at generating employment. It is for 10+2 students, students of B.A. Programme and other programmes to equip them to get a job in the media. There will be around 40 seats and for most of the classes, we will be inviting members of the media.”
Aside from this, the varsity has several diploma courses, most of which are offered in language. However, these courses are offered by the university department and not by individual colleges.
The introduction of diploma courses and vocational courses by the colleges and the university is a step towards equipping students with the changing global scenario that appreciates specific skills in a learner. This will go a long way in helping students compete at the national and international levels, preparing them with skills that are highly in demand in the job market.
