Sensational Web of Lies : Black Widow by Christopher Brookmyre

‘Black Widow’, the seventh book in the ‘Jack Parlabane’ series is a psychological thriller that has been delivered beautifully by the exceptional award-winning Scottish crime author, Christopher Brookmyre. The book sings of a storyline with unbound precision and sophistication. What sets the book apart is it’s twisting concept, a story that speaks wonders about intelligence. The book captures its audience with a plot full of suspense.

It starts when the protagonist, Diana Jager’s life falls apart as her details go viral. The same had been done by someone who stands against Diana’s ferocious blogged thoughts on sexism in medicine. Diana soon finds a ray of hope in the nerve-wracking mess when she falls in love with Peter; a guy straight out of a fairy tale. Within six months of their short-spanned marriage, Peter is found dead in a tragic road accident. Spikes of doubt arise in Peter’s sister Lucy’s minds and she recruits a reporter ‘Jack Parlabane’ to get to the bottom of the issue.

A heavily intense story, the book fits perfectly in the true genre of psychological thriller. The author carries its readers safely in the palm of his hand with his flawless storytelling. It is easy for anyone to flow with the impactful commentary. Like a black widow’s net, the intricate detailing could have been hard to navigate through had it not been narrated by changing perspectives and written with exactitude. To increase the note of thriller, each chapter is layered and each line in the book is stringed together to dawn on a piece much bigger than those lines themselves. The climax of the book hits the reader’s core in an amazing way.

In my opinion, it’s a must-read for those readers who enjoy crime thriller with a hint of ‘craziness’ and strive to read a piece which is rare not just because of the extraordinary plot.
