University of Delhi recently dropped the plan of adding 5 extra seats in undergraduate courses in each of its affiliated college. The decision was taken after much controversy. Students, teachers and some colleges said that they cannot go ahead with the plan. They admitted that this was because the last date of admission was December 31 and there was no time left.
The principals of the affiliated colleges had welcomed this new decision. Talking to TOI, Anju Srivastava, principal of Hindu College said “It all happened in short notice and colleges require time to discuss with their governing bodies (GBs).”
While many principals of the affiliated colleges did not approve their governing bodies. They expressed that the university had not issued any specific guidelines for the process.
The decision was to add 315 seats in 63 affiliated colleges. This was a one-time measure to allow registered students who couldn’t get admission due to reasons related to the pandemic. All this was notified on December 21. The decision arrived at the demand of principals and other members of the executive council. This is the highest decision-making body of the university.
Earlier, all the principals were asked to submit a list with the name of five candidates for 5 extra seats respectively. However, no seats would be included for admission now.
