Pranab Mukherjee, former Indian president passed away at 84. The statesman had undergone brain surgery. He was on ventilator support at the Army and Refrerral hospital in the National Capital. The respected politician also tested positive for Covid-19 in the hospital. The hospital reported a decline in his condition this morning.
Early Life
He was born on December 11, 1935, in Birbhum District of West Bengal. He also completed his studies from the University of Calcutta. This included a Masters in History and Political Science and an LLB degree. Mukherjee’s loved ones called him ‘Pranab Da’.
Political Career
The respected politician had a five-decade-long political career. He worked at important positions under the leadership of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Narasimha Rao, and Manmohan Singh. Moreover, he served as the MP seven times. Along with this, he was a significant member of the Congress Party. During this time, he was an important minister in various Cabinets. He became India’s youngest Finance Minister at the age of 47 in the year of 1982. While from 2004, he leads three vital ministries- finance, defense, and external affairs.
Brief exit from the Congress
Mukherjee once quitted the Congress once in 1986. This was for a short period of three years. He started his own party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress (RSC). However, this new party merged with the Congress. This was after Rajiv Gandhi and Mukherjee came together at a compromise.
Almost Prime Minister twice
Additionally, Mukherjee almost became prime minister twice. The first time was after the assassination of Indira Gandhi. This was again a possibility after Sonia Gandhi refused the responsibility in 2004. However, this never turned into reality. Despite this, Mukherjee remained a crucial member of the party and government.
Mukherjee- the 13th President of India
Mukherjee then served as the 13th President of India. This was from 2012 to 2017. He was the one who made it easier for the general public to visit the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He was also honored with Bharat Ratna Award last year.
Moreover, the death of the former president was confirmed by his son Abhijit Mukherjee via Twitter.
