THE IRON MAN IS OUR SARDAR!!”

The Statue of Unity is dedicated to the sculptor of modern India who was also the first deputy Prime Minister of India and Bharat Ratna awardee Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, affectionately known as the “Iron Man of India”. He was a freedom fighter, senior leader and one of the founding fathers of the Republic of India.

The statue is located on the river island called Sadhu Bet facing the Narmada Dam near Rajpipla in the Indian state of Gujarat. The monument along with its surroundings occupies over 20,000 square meters and is surrounded by a 12-square km artificial lake. It is the world’s tallest statue at the height of 182 meters (597 ft). The Statue of Unity, with a height of 182 meters is the world’s tallest statue. It is constructed with steel framing, reinforced cement concrete, and bronze cladding.

The construction project was given in contract to Larsen & Toubro in October 2014 for its lowest bid of ‚Çπ2,989 crore (US$420 million) for the design, construction, and maintenance. The construction began on 31st October 2014 and was completed in mid-October 2018. It has been designed by Indian sculptor, Ram V. Sutar and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on 31 October 2018. This date also marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.

The one who won over British leaders in the Satyagraha of Kheda and Bardoli, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the Bismarck of Modern India, who worked for the welfare of farmers. He is popular as the architect of Independent India as he united the diverse 562 princely states to build the Republic of India. The Statue of Unity, which is the tallest in the world is a matter of great pride for every Indian.
