Schools reopening: A state wise analysis

The Unlock 5 guidelines have introduced many relaxations. This includes granting the states to decide on reopening schools from October 15. They will have to analyze the situation themselves for the same. However, many states have decided to postpone reopening as it can cause a sudden outburst.

States like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have decided not to open schools. On the other hand, some like Punjab has announced the reopening of schools. Moreover, a few schools had resumed classes from September 21 voluntarily for Classes 9-12. The centre advised this earlier during Unlock 4.

State Wise Decisions

Delhi: The Delhi Government has announced that schools will not be reopened till October 31.

Andhra Pradesh: The Government of Andhra Pradesh has halted the reopening of schools till November 2.

Punjab: Schools and Coaching institutions will reopen in the state from October 15 in a graded manner. Parental approval will be necessary for students of Classes 9-12. Additionally, attendance will not be compulsory. However, online classes will remain the preferred medium of teaching.

Uttar Pradesh: The state government said that the schools for students of Classes 9 to 12 will be reopening from October 19. Shifts will be organized for conducting classes. Along with this, social distancing and sanitization of the premises will be the school’s duty. However, the schools must be outside the containment zone.

Chhattisgarh: Schools in this state will continue to stay closed.

Madhya Pradesh: The reopening of schools for primary and middle schools is on hold in the state. But the state has partially reopened schools since for Classes 9 to 12 since September 21. Following strict protocols is mandatory. While only a limited number of students are allowed. However, the government may consider increasing the strength of the classes gradually.

West Bengal: Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee made an important announcement. After Mid-November, the decision regarding reopening schools will be taken.

Gujarat: The Gujarat government will consider reopening of schools only after Diwali.

Karnataka: October 12 to 30 has been declared a midterm holiday. The government has expressed that they will analyze the situation before taking any decision.
